The History of the WTO

The Wichita Tennis Open was born in 2015 as a men's-only singles and doubles tournament on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures Tour. The tournament expanded in 2021 to include a women's singles and doubles championship. In 2025, the tournament staff received a special ten-year trophy from the United States Tennis Association in celebration of the tenth year of Wichita being on the ITF Futures Circuit. The tournaments have traditionally been held within the first three weeks of June.

The Wichita Tennis Open is a symbol and reflection of the Wichita Tennis Community, which comes together to put on an event regarded as one of the best on the circuit by both fans and players. The event could not happen without the dedicated yearly support of the Wichita Tennis Community.

Year-By-Year Summary of the Wichita Tennis Open

2025

The 2025 Wichita Tennis Open began on June 9 with men's qualifiers and ended when Fiona Crawley defeated Mayu Crossley 6-0, 7-5 on Sunday, Jun. 22 in the women's singles final. For Crawley, it was her second time in the women's final. In the doubles bracket, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Maria Berlanga Bandera defeated three-seed Catherine Harrison and Christina Rosca 7-5, 7-5 on Jun. 21 to claim the doubles title. An improbable run that saw them take down the two, three, and four seeds on the way to the championship.

On the men's side, eight-seed Hiroki Moriya became the oldest WTO Champion in history at 35 years old, with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over former Florida Gator and two-seed Andres Andrade. In doubles, Ozan Baris and Matthew Shearer defeated Austrailian duo and top-seeded Matt Hulme and Kody Pearson 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). For Baris, it was his second doubles title in Wichita, as he paired with Garrett Johns to win the 2023 doubles championship.

2024

In the 2024 tournaments, Micah Braswell, a qualifier, made a run all the way to the men's singles final, ultimately defeating fellow Texas Longhorn and rising tennis star Eliot Spizziri 6-4, 6-3. The men's side was full of college tennis stars, with seven of the eight quarterfinalists and all four semifinalists: Braswell and Spizziri (Texas), Sebastian Gorzny (TCU and Texas), and Ethan Quinn Georgia) being current or former college tennis players. On the men's doubles side, Pranav Kumar and Joshua Sheehy defeated Spizzirri and Cleve Harper 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-8 to take the doubles crown. Spizzirri is the only player in tournament history to make both the doubles and singles final and finish as runner-up in both.

On the women's side, rising star Cadence Brace became the youngest WTO women's champion in history at just 19, defeating Victoria Hu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the singles final. In the doubles final, third-seeded Alicia Herrero Linana and Melany Solange Krywoj defeated Ashton Bowers and Sophia Webster 6-3, 6-3.

2023

The 2023 Wichita Tennis Open was highlighted by Tennys Sandgren, a two-time Australian Open Quarterfinalist and former top-50-ranked player, competing in men's singles. It was one of the last events for Sandgren before he retired in early 2024. Ethan Quinn did not lose a set on his way to the singles title, defeating Ozan Baris 6-3, 7-5. In doubles, the aforementioned Baris/Johns duo beat Cannon Kingsley and James Kent Trotter 7-6 (4), 6-3 to win the doubles championship.

In women's doubles, top-seed Reese Brantmeier and Maria Mateas defeated Ava Markham and Alina Shcherbinina 6-2, 6-4 to capture the title. Brantmeier and Mateas are the only No. 1 seed women's team to win the title in WTO history.

Stacey Fung defeated Fiona Crawley 6-3, 6-2 to win the women's singles title to conclude the 2023 WTO.

2022

In the 2022 Wichita Tennis Open, Clement Chidekh won the men's singles tournament, losing just one set on his way to the crown, including defeating the No. 1 seed in the semifinal. In doubles, two-seed Yu Hsiou Hu and Yuta Shimizu won the title in a super tiebreaker, defeating the No. 4 seed.

On the women's side, four-seed Elizabeth Mandlik beat former top 100 player and top-seeded Kayla Day 6-3, 6-3 to win the singles championship. In women's doubles, sisters Allura and Maribella Zamarripa cruised to the title, not losing a set on their way winning the championship.
